Notes for Dionesio MARIENI
The Marieni name differs from the more common (in Italy) Mariani because, even though both have the same root (Mary, the Virgin), Marieni has a german origin.
It is tradition that the family comes from Marienburg (Town of Mary), german name for Malbrok or Malborg a town in northern Poland (Prussia) the land of the Teutonic Knights.
It is also tradition that the Marieni were given the title of Margrave (or Marquis) by emperor Sigismund in the early 1400 and a feud in border land to administer and defend.
This land is placed around Passo San Marco and extended from the towns of Averara and Mezzoldo to the town of Morbegno, on the road that from the Brembana valley north of Bergamo, takes to Switzerland through the Valtellina.
At those times all the people, mainly soldiers and farmers, living and depending on the noble family that used to administer the feud, were called the "people of..." after the name of the feud. That is how the name of the nobles passed on to all the other people.
