Darlys worked while Tom attended school. After Tom graduated, she became a full-time homemaker.

Tom attended Analy High School in Sebastopol where he was student body president during his senior year. Tom and Darlys met when they were freshmen at Analy High School in 1952. They married in 1958 in Darlys’s home town of Forestville. After graduating from Stanford University, Tom went to Woodland, California where he taught in their high school for the next 30 years until he retired. During his years in Woodland, he and Darlys raised two children. Tom traveled to Europe several times during his years as a teacher and spent a whole year in Madrid where he attended the University of Madrid. Tom also received grants to attend summer sessions at U.C. Berkeley, UCLA, Sacramento State, U. of Denver, and the University of Guanajuato, Mexico. In the mid 1990’s, he and Darlys sold their home in Woodland and bought a condominuim in Santa Rosa.
