This may be the Giovanni Vanoni who came to Petaluma, California in 1869, then returned to Switzerland in about 1896. In the 1880 census, he is listed as age 30, single, and working for Louis Pedrazzini in San Antonio, Marin County, California. When he returned to California in 1901 at the age of 52, he declared that he was married.
